Death and All That Jazz - Notes and Images for Episode 80

The photograph  and headline of the Inquirer story about the passing of actor David Burns on stage at the Forrest Theatre in March of 1970.

Below, a photo taken by the Evening Bulletin, about the protests against the show Lovely Ladies, Kind Gentlemen at the Shubert. It is interesting to note that the word "oriental" - a term usually avoided these days to describe people of Asian descent - was used by the protestors themselves. As is often the case with racial and social group terminology in America, accepted norms have changed over time.  (Photos from the collection of the Temple University Library Special Research Center.).

Eleanor Calbes as "Lotus Blossom" and Kenneth Nelson as "Sakini" perform in Lovely Ladies, Kind Gentlemen. The signs protesting "tokenism" outside the theater were calling out the producers for using some actors of Asian descent (usually women) but still casting white actors (usually men) in major roles. Above, Yul Brynner and Joan Diener in Odyssey  - taken before it was renamed "Home Sweet Homer."

Below, photos of the workshop rehearsals of Brainchild at the Forrest Theatre. Michel Legrand, Tovah Feldshuh and Dorian Harewood can be seen together in the photo on lower right. (New York Public Library Online Collection)

Below, playwright Arnold Wesker and Zero Mostel in Philadelphia, in a photo taken shortly before the actor's death.

Next - photos from the 1975 tryout run of Chicago in Philadelphia. Below: Jerry Orbach, Chita Rivera and Gwen Verdon pose under the marquee of the Forrest Theatre.

Above: Philly newspaper ads for Chicago, and a photo of Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera in costume for the final number of the show.

Above, a news photographer was posted in the wings to take a photo of actress Lenora Nemetz taking her bows with Chita Rivera, after she had stepped in as Roxie Hart to cover for an injured Gwen Verdon.

Richard Rodgers and Liv Ullman pose in a publicity photo for I Remember Mama.

Finally, choreographer Billy Williams, and the cast of Bubbling Brown Sugar rehearsing on the Walnut Street Theatre's stage.
